A Guide to Sound Effects, and Bonus Music Article

Epic Sound’s “The Guide to Sound Effects”

Mark Newheiser’s “Beyond the Beep: Techniques and Styles of Video Game Music”

“The Guide to Sound Effects” is a (sometimes disconcertingly) thorough breakdown of ways to create each of the listed sounds on your own. The advice is pulled from a pretty big range of professional audio folks, all cited next to their suggestions, which is also pretty awesome.

“Beyond the Beep” is a little more straightforward – it’s an article about designing music to suit and contribute to your gameplay. But it’ a cool article that touches on some fairly technical concepts as well as the broad overviews, and breaks down static and dynamic music, so it’s a good read regardless.
