An unofficial breakdown of WindWaker’s graphics

warby’s “Zelda: Wind Waker Tech and Texture Analysis”

This lovely (and image-laden) Polycount thread by warby contains a great observational breakdown of a lot of what went into creating the distinct style of Wind Waker, ranging from textures and shaders to lighting, rigging and animation, hardware tricks, and a host of other choices that went into creating such a memorable (and well-aging) game on a console as graphically limited as the Gamecube.

Admittedly, it being from the Gamecube era, not everything in article is going to be a dead fit for current game development. But isn’t a pile of good analysis, textures and tricks enough to make up for that?
